When Your Flame Flickers

A flickering flame is still a flame. My friend, imagine a beautiful, warm hearth, logs crackling, flames dancing. That's how we often envision our faith…

Scripture
"My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to Your word."

— Psalm 119:25

From the book "Still Walking"
"A flickering flame is still a flame."

My friend, imagine a beautiful, warm hearth, logs crackling, flames dancing. That's how we often envision our faith, isn't it? A vibrant, powerful blaze. But let's be honest, there are days, even seasons, when that grand fire feels like it's dwindled down to just a tiny, desperate flicker. You know those days, don't you? The ones where just lifting your head from the pillow feels like moving a mountain, and your spirit feels heavy, bound to the earth and the grit of daily struggles. It’s like the Psalmist himself, feeling his soul clinging to the dust, yearning for a breath of fresh life.

In those moments, it’s easy for doubt to creep in, whispering that your little flicker isn't enough. You might even wonder if God has forgotten about you, if your once-bright hope has somehow become too dim to notice. You look at others, seemingly full of boundless energy and unwavering faith, and you compare your tiny spark to their roaring bonfire. But here's the beautiful truth, a truth I want you to grab hold of with all your heart:

That flickering flame, my dear friend, is still a flame! It's still breathing, still alive, still connected to the source of all light. It's a miracle in itself, isn't it? Even when your soul feels parched, when the weight of the world seems to press down, that small, persistent glow is a testament to the divine spark within you that absolutely refuses to be extinguished. It's proof that there's a deeper current running through you, a whisper of life that even the dust cannot completely smother.

God isn't looking for our perfect performance; He's looking for our honest heart. He doesn't demand a raging inferno from you every single moment of every single day. No, He simply asks you to show up, just as you are, even with a soul that feels a little dusty, a little worn. That faint spark, that barely-there glow, is more than enough for Him to work with. It's in those vulnerable, raw moments, when we humbly admit our need and lean on His grace, that His power and His boundless love truly begin to shine through and ignite something new within us.

So, don't you dare despise that flicker! Don't minimize its importance. Instead, embrace it, nurture it, and believe with all your being that within that humble spark lies the powerful promise of a renewed fire. God's breath of life is ready to fan that flame into a magnificent blaze, bringing fresh hope and vibrant life right where you need it most. Get ready, friend, because your breakthrough is on the way!

Reflect

What small flicker of faith or hope can you nurture today, trusting that God sees it and is ready to fan it into a powerful flame?

Today's prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, we come to You sometimes with souls that feel dusty, and spirits that are weary. Our faith, at times, feels like a tiny flicker, barely holding on. Thank You, Lord, that even in our weakest moments, You see that spark within us. We pray for Your life-giving breath to fan that flicker into a vibrant flame once more. Renew our strength, refresh our hope, and remind us of Your unfailing presence, transforming our weariness into Your boundless joy. Amen.
