Scripture
"But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him."

— Luke 15:20

From the book "Still Walking"
"The road home. Returning to faith, prodigal's journey. Embrace of the Father. God's welcome, unconditional love."

Friend, have you ever felt that tug in your heart, that whisper that says, 'It's time to come home'? Perhaps life has led you down a winding path, one that felt far from the familiar, comforting roads you once knew. Maybe you’ve tasted the dust of disappointment, the ache of regret, and now you wonder if there’s a way back, a welcome waiting for you. It’s a common feeling, this belief that the journey back needs to be paved with arduous effort and heavy apologies.

But let me tell you, that narrative, that sense of having to earn your way back, it’s not from our Heavenly Father. Our God doesn’t sit perched on a distant throne, tallying up our missteps. No, His heart yearns for you, and His eyes are always scanning the horizon, looking for that first sign of your return, no matter how far you've strayed. Just like the father in that powerful story Jesus told, our Father sees you from ‘a great way off.’

Think about that image for a moment. The son was still far, undoubtedly covered in the grime of his choices, probably rehearsing his speech of repentance. He wasn't cleaned up; he wasn't perfectly articulate. But the father didn't wait for any of that. He didn't stand there with a stern look, arms crossed, demanding an explanation. Oh no, friend! He saw his son, and compassion surged through him like a river. He didn't just walk; he RAN. He sprinted with open arms, a heart bursting with unconditional love, to meet his child on the road.

That’s the incredible, grace-filled truth of our God! He doesn’t merely tolerate your return; He celebrates it! He doesn't hold your past against you; He rushes to embrace you. This isn't just a story for those who have taken a dramatic detour. This is for anyone who feels a little distant, a little cold, or who secretly believes they haven't been 'good enough' to deserve His favor. The journey home isn’t about proving yourself to God; it’s about opening your heart to receive His boundless love and forgiveness.

You don't have to clean yourself up before you come to Him. You don't have to have all the answers or perfectly articulate your regrets. His love is not conditional on your performance; it's steadfast, unyielding, and always available. The hardest part, sometimes, is taking that first step, the decision to turn your heart back toward Him. But once you do, you’ll discover that the road isn’t long at all, because the Father is already running toward you, ready to shower you with His goodness and grace. Step into His loving embrace today!

Reflect

What might be holding you back from fully embracing the Father's unconditional welcome, and what little step can you take today to lean into His outstretched arms?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your endless mercies and Your unwavering love. Thank You that even when we wander, Your eyes are always on the horizon, watching for our return. Help us to let go of any shame or guilt that tries to hold us back, and instead, to confidently run into Your open arms. We receive Your compassion, Your forgiveness, and Your unconditional embrace today. Amen.
