Called to Serve

Scripture
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."

— 1 Corinthians 12:4-6

From the book "Still Walking"
"Our vocations, whether paid or unpaid, are not arbitrary. They are often expressions of the unique gifts God has interwoven into our very being. When we understand ourselves as stewards of these gifts, our daily work transforms into a sacred act of service, reflecting the diverse workings of the same God."

Have you ever stood in front of a mirror and wondered if your daily routine really matters in the grand scheme of things? Maybe you look at your neighbor’s life—the one with the high-profile career or the dynamic ministry—and you feel like a small seedling in the shadow of a giant oak. I’ve been there, too. I’ve looked at the quiet solitude of my own writing desk and wondered if it holds a candle to the person standing on a stage reaching thousands. We fall into the comparison trap, don't we? We measure our "impact" by the size of the crowd or the weight of the paycheck.

But I want you to lean in and hear this: your Father doesn’t use the world’s yardstick. When God looks at your life, He isn’t looking for a carbon copy of someone else. He is looking for you. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians that there are "different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit." Think about that for a moment. The same Spirit that moved over the waters at creation is the very same Spirit leaning over your shoulder as you balance that spreadsheet, as you stir the soup for a sick neighbor, or as you patiently explain a math problem to a frustrated child.

Our God is a Master Artist, and he never paints the same sunset twice. Why would He want His children to be identical? He delights in the diversity of His creation. He loves the variety of your service. Whether you are leading a boardroom or rocking a cradle, you are a steward of a divine original. There are "different kinds of working," the scripture says, but in every single one of them, it is the same God at work. Can you imagine the freedom in that? You don't have to be them. You just have to be the version of you that God dreamed up before the world began.

When you begin to see your vocation through the lens of grace, everything changes. Your cubicle becomes a sanctuary. Your kitchen table becomes an altar. Your commute becomes a moment of holy preparation. It’s no longer about the "kind" of service you provide; it’s about the "same Lord" who called you to it. You aren't just working for a boss or a paycheck; you are a vital part of a magnificent masterpiece God is weaving together across the globe.

So, today, hold your head a little higher. Shake off the heavy chains of comparison and step into the sunlight of His approval. Whether your work is seen by millions or known only to Him, it is sacred. It is necessary. There is no such thing as an "ordinary" task when it is done by a child of the King. You were chosen for this moment, equipped with these specific gifts, and called by the same God who is working through us all. Go out and be exactly who He made you to be, knowing that He is smiling down on the beautiful, unique way you serve Him.

Reflect

How do you see God's gifts and your calling playing out in your current work or responsibilities?

Today's prayer
Lord, thank you for the unique gifts you have given me. Help me to use them faithfully in my work and service, knowing that you are at work in and through me. Amen.
