When Hope Feels Far Off

In the arid landscape of grief, hope can feel like a mirage, shimmering just out of reach. But our God is not just a source of hope; He is the *God of Hope*…

Scripture
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

— Romans 15:13

From the book "Still Walking"
"In the arid landscape of grief, hope can feel like a mirage, shimmering just out of reach. But our God is not just a source of hope; He is the *God of Hope*. He doesn't just offer it; He embodies it. And through the Holy Spirit, He desires to pour that very hope directly into our weary hearts."

Have you ever stood on the edge of a vast, dusty desert, squinting toward the horizon for just a single drop of rain? Maybe that’s where you are today. Perhaps a season of loss or a shadow of grief has made the landscape of your life feel a bit arid, a bit brittle. You look for joy, but it feels like a mirage—shimmering in the distance, beautiful to look at, but slipping through your fingers the moment you reach for it. If your heart feels heavy and the well feels dry, I want you to take a deep breath. You are not alone, and your story is far from over.

Paul gives us a beautiful promise in Romans 15:13, but I want you to notice how he introduces our Father. He calls Him the "God of hope." Isn’t that a wonderful thought? God doesn’t just deal in hope or keep a little bit under lock and key for a rainy day. He is the very essence of it. Hope is His heartbeat. It’s His signature. And because He is the God of hope, He doesn’t expect you to manufacture your own strength. He isn’t asking you to grit your teeth and "try harder" to be happy. He knows you’re weary. He knows the tank is empty.

I remember seasons in my own life where peace felt like a foreign language I’d forgotten how to speak. I would try to conjure up a better attitude, hoping that if I just thought enough positive thoughts, the sun would break through the clouds. But hope isn't a DIY project. It’s a divine infusion. It’s not about your power; it’s about His. When you lean into Him and simply say, "Lord, I’m trusting You with this broken piece of my heart," something miraculous begins to happen. You stop trying to pump water from a dry well and you start standing under the waterfall of His grace.

The scripture says He wants to fill you with "all joy and peace." Not just a little bit. Not just enough to get by. He wants to saturate your spirit until you "overflow." Picture a cup sitting under a running faucet. The water doesn't just fill the bottom; it rises, it reaches the rim, and then it spills over the sides, refreshing everything it touches. That is what the Holy Spirit does within us.

It might not happen in a thunderclap or a lightning bolt. For most of us, it happens in the quiet. It’s the subtle return of a smile. It’s a night of sleep where the anxiety doesn't keep watch. It's that gentle, persistent flow of peace that whispers, "It’s going to be okay." If your hope feels dim today, don't worry about tomorrow. Just look to the God of hope. He’s right there in the desert with you, and He’s already turning the sand into a garden. Trust Him. He is faithful to finish what He started in you.

Reflect

What practices help you to trust in God when hope feels distant?

Today's prayer
God of Hope, I come to you with a heart that longs for your presence. Fill me with your joy and peace, and by the power of your Holy Spirit, help me to overflow with hope once again. Amen.
