Building on Holy Ground

Sometimes, the hardest part of rebuilding is believing the foundation is still there. It is, and it's holy ground. Friend, have you ever felt like your world…

Scripture
"They said, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work."

— Nehemiah 2:18

From the book "Still Walking"
"Sometimes, the hardest part of rebuilding is believing the foundation is still there. It is, and it's holy ground."

Friend, have you ever felt like your world just crumbled around you? Like a beautiful sandcastle, meticulously built, suddenly washed away by an unexpected wave? Perhaps a dream dissolved, a relationship frayed, or a career path vanished into thin air. One moment, you’re standing tall, and the next, you’re looking at a pile of what used to be, wondering, "Where do I even begin?" The weight of it all can be heavy, leaving us feeling lost in the rubble.

But here’s the good news: what looks like an ending to us is often just a new beginning with God. When Nehemiah looked at the broken-down walls of Jerusalem, he didn't throw his hands up in despair. He saw not just ruin, but potential. He heard the whisper of God’s promise in the wind, a promise that good things were still possible. He prayerfully, intentionally, declared, "Let us start rebuilding." And just like that, they began a good work.

This wasn't merely about putting stones back together; it was about reclaiming a sacred identity, rekindling hope in a community, and restoring a vibrant connection with the Divine. And guess what? This powerful truth applies to your life too! You might be looking at what feels like a heap of broken pieces, but your foundation—the holy ground of God’s unwavering grace and His incredible purpose for your life—is still gloriously intact. It’s never been moved, never been shaken.

God isn't asking you to re-create the past. He's inviting you to build something new, something perhaps even stronger and more radiant, forged in the fires of His boundless love and mercy. Think of it not as repairing a broken structure, but as constructing a magnificent new dwelling, designed by the greatest Architect known to man. He’s already laid the groundwork, an unshakeable foundation that’s been there all along.

So, if you find yourself surrounded by what feels like debris, remember Nehemiah's courageous spirit. Your God is the Master Restorer, the ultimate Builder. He is extending His hand to you right now, inviting you to join Him in the "good work" of rebuilding. You don't have to do it alone, in your own strength. He is your Cornerstone, your Blueprint, and your unfailing Partner. With Him, every single step of the construction process is filled with grace, purpose, and the promise of a magnificent tomorrow. Get ready for something beautiful to emerge from the ashes, friend, because with God, your best days are always ahead!

Reflect

What "good work" is God inviting you to begin rebuilding in your life today, and how can you take one small step forward with Him as your guide?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for being the God of restoration and new beginnings. Even when our lives feel like ruins, we know Your grace is our unshakeable foundation. Fill us with courage to take the first step, to believe in the "good work" You are doing in us. Help us to see with Your eyes of hope and possibility, knowing You are our divine Architect, guiding every single building block. We trust in Your magnificent plan for our lives. Amen.
