Unshakeable Stillness

Scripture
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives."

— John 14:27

From the book "Still Walking"
"The peace offered by Christ isn't dependent on circumstances, but rather is a deep-rooted, unshakeable stillness in the heart of the storm."

Have you ever noticed how the world defines peace? It tells you that peace is what happens when the bills are all paid, the kids are finally behaving, and the doctor’s report is flawless. It’s a peace that says, "I’ll be okay as long as everything stays okay." But we both know the problem with that kind of quiet, don't we? It’s fragile. It’s a thin piece of glass that shatters the moment life throws a pebble. If your peace is built on your circumstances, you’ll be on a roller coaster every single day.

But listen to the Master’s voice. In a room filled with anxious friends, on the eve of his own greatest storm, Jesus didn’t offer a temporary fix. He looked them in the eye and whispered a promise that still echoes into your living room today: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives." Do you hear the distinction? The world offers a peace that is external, but Jesus offers a peace that is eternal.

Perhaps you’re sitting there today feeling like the waves are a bit too high. Maybe the noise of the world—the deadlines, the headlines, the "what-ifs"—is shouting so loud you can’t hear your own heartbeat. You’ve been chasing a quiet moment, thinking if you could just get away, or just get ahead, you’d finally breathe deep. But friend, you don't need a change of scenery; you need a change of anchor.

Christ’s peace isn't the absence of trouble; it's the presence of a Person. It’s an unshakeable stillness that doesn't wait for the storm to pass before it settles in your heart. It’s the deep-rooted calm of a ship’s hull that stays steady even when the whitecaps are foaming. Why? Because the Captain is on board. Because you are held by a hand that has never let go and never will.

Think about that. If the world didn’t give you this peace, the world can’t take it away. Your boss didn’t give it to you, so your boss can’t steal it. Your critics didn’t grant it, so their words can’t diminish it. It is a gift—a divine, supernatural deposit into your spirit. It’s the quiet confidence that says, "I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I know Who holds tomorrow."

Today, you don't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. You weren't built for that. You were built to be a temple for His presence. So, why not stop the frantic pacing? Why not let the inner clamor subside? Just for a moment, let go of the need to control the outcome. Surrender the "how" and the "when" to the One who loves you more than you can imagine. Take a deep breath and lean into that promise. He hasn’t left you to navigate the fog alone. He has left you His peace. It’s yours right now. It is deep, it is real, and it is unshakeable. Reach out and take it. You are safe in His hands.

Reflect

How does recognizing the temporary nature of worldly peace deepen your appreciation for the eternal peace offered by Christ?

Today's prayer
