The Joy of Looking Outward

In 'Still Walking,' I share how true walking with God often means walking low, humbling ourselves enough to truly see and serve those around us. What if I…

Scripture
"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."

— Philippians 2:3-4

From the book "Still Walking"
"In 'Still Walking,' I share how true walking with God often means walking low, humbling ourselves enough to truly see and serve those around us."

What if I told you there’s a secret to unlocking a deeper, more profound joy in your life, a joy that doesn't depend on what you get, but on what you give? Imagine a refreshing breeze, sweeping through your soul, carrying away the dust of worry and self-preoccupation, leaving behind a lightness, a sense of purpose. Have you ever felt that? That's the essence of what happens when we shift our focus from 'me' to 'we.'

You see, friend, it’s so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of our own lives. We’ve got deadlines looming, bills to pay, dreams we're chasing with all our might. And in the midst of it all, we might inadvertently build little walls around our hearts, convinced that our own struggles are the most pressing, our own needs the most urgent. It's a natural inclination, but God, in His infinite wisdom and boundless love, offers us a higher way, a more fulfilling path.

His Word, like a gentle whisper to our spirit, guides us to a revolutionary truth in Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” This isn't just nice advice; it's a divine blueprint for a life overflowing with peace and favor.

Hear this, my friend: humility isn’t about diminishing your worth or thinking less of yourself. Oh no! It’s about being so secure in who God says you are—His beloved child, wonderfully made—that you’re free to think *of yourself less*. It’s about realizing that the person next to you, the one you pass in the grocery store, the colleague in the next cubicle, they too carry a unique story, with dreams and challenges just as significant as your own. When we embrace this truth, when we choose to intentionally lift others up, something miraculous begins to unfold.

When you intentionally seek to bless someone else, to meet a need, to offer a word of encouragement, you're not depleting your own reserves. Quite the opposite! You're tapping into an endless wellspring of God's grace and provision. The more you pour out, the more He pours in. It’s a divine exchange, a spiritual phenomenon where generosity begets abundance, and compassion sparks deeper connection. You become a conduit for God's blessings, and the beauty is, those blessings flow *through* you, and they also flow *to* you.

So today, let's open our eyes and our hearts a little wider. Look for that opportunity, that small moment, to put someone else's interests before your own. It could be a kind word, a helping hand, a listening ear. These small acts of love, rooted in humility, are the very keys to unlocking the abundant life God has planned for you—a life rich in purpose, overflowing with joy, and radiating His incredible love to a world that desperately needs it. You are destined to be a blessing, and as you bless others, you will find yourself more blessed than you ever imagined.

Reflect

How can I intentionally shift my focus today from purely my own concerns to genuinely considering and uplifting the needs and interests of someone else in my life?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before you with grateful hearts, ready to embrace Your divine plan for our lives. Forgive us for the times we’ve focused too much on ourselves, missing the opportunities to be a blessing to others. Open our eyes, Lord, to see the needs around us, and ignite within us a spirit of true humility and selfless love. Empower us by Your Spirit to value others, to serve with joy, and to be a radiant example of Your kindness. Thank You for showing us the path to abundant life as we extend Your love to those around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
