Making Room for More

True influence isn't found in seeking personal greatness, but in the radical, humbling choice to intentionally make room for God to be greater. My friend…

Scripture
"He must become greater; I must become less."

— John 3:30

From the book "Still Walking"
"True influence isn't found in seeking personal greatness, but in the radical, humbling choice to intentionally make room for God to be greater."

My friend, have you ever felt that whisper, that gentle nudge to achieve more, to build a bigger platform, to let your voice echo a little louder in the crowded marketplace of life? It’s a natural human pull, isn't it? We live in a world that often measures success by how much we accumulate, how widely we’re known, and how brightly our own star shines. We’re taught to reach for the top, to make ourselves indispensable, to stand out from the crowd.

But what if true influence, lasting joy, and profound purpose come from a different place altogether? What if the secret to living a truly abundant life isn't about *us* becoming greater, but about something — or Someone — else becoming greater *through* us?

Think about John the Baptist. He stood at the very threshold of the most monumental moment in history – the arrival of the Messiah. He had a following, a message, a powerful presence. He could have easily tried to build his own kingdom, to bask in the glow of the spotlight that he had, in many ways, helped to create. But John, with profound clarity and unwavering devotion, understood his assignment. He declared with utmost humility, “He must become greater; I must become less.”

This wasn't an act of self-deprecation or a desire to shrink away into obscurity. Oh no, this was a powerful declaration of identity and purpose! John knew that his greatest calling wasn't to amplify his own name, but to point every single person he encountered towards the One who truly mattered, the One who held the keys to eternal life. He willingly stepped back, not because he was insignificant, but because he understood the incredible significance of making room for Jesus to shine.

And friends, that same liberating truth is available to us today. In a world that constantly beckons us to put ourselves first, to promote our own agenda, to chase after our own glory, this divine principle invites us to a different path—a path of surrender, a path of humility, a path of extraordinary blessing. When we choose to decrease, to intentionally make space for God's plans, His purposes, and His glory in our lives, something miraculous happens. He begins to increase within us, and through us, touching lives in ways we could never imagine or accomplish on our own.

This isn't about losing yourself; it's about finding your truest self in Him. It’s about recognizing that our greatest achievements, our most profound impact, will never come from our own striving but from allowing the Father's power to flow unhindered through surrendered vessels. When we make room for God, He fills that space with His goodness, His favor, and His anointing. And that, my friend, is where true greatness lies—not in what *we* do, but in what He does *through* us. You are destined to be a vessel of God's abundant grace, and as you make room for Him, get ready for Him to do mighty things inside and through you!

Reflect

In what specific areas of your life can you intentionally “decrease” today, allowing God to “increase” and work more powerfully through you?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we come to You today with open hearts, ready to embrace Your divine plan for us. We confess that sometimes our own desires for recognition and personal greatness can overshadow our true purpose. Help us to release our grip on self-promotion and to wholeheartedly declare, "You must become greater; we must become less." Fill us with the courage and humility of John the Baptist, so that our lives become clear signposts pointing others directly to Your glorious Son. We trust that as we make room for You, Your light will shine brighter through us than we could ever imagine. Amen.
