Choosing Joy: A Permanent Address for Your Heart

Scripture
"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!"

— Philippians 4:4

From the book "Still Walking"
"I used to think joy was a reward for arriving. God taught me it’s a choice, a posture for the entire journey, even in `the hard and messy middle`."

Ever feel like joy is playing hide-and-seek with you? Maybe you've been there, friend, thinking, "I'll be truly happy when..." when that big promotion comes through, when the kids finally listen, when all the pieces of your life just *click* into place. It’s easy to believe that joy is a prize waiting for us at the finish line, a treat we earn after a long, hard race. But what if joy isn't a destination at all, but rather, the very fuel that helps us run the race? What if it's a companion for the journey, not just the reward at the end?

We've all chased that elusive "if only" joy. If only this changed, if only that improved, then I'd finally be happy. But life, with all its beautiful messes and unexpected detours, rarely hands us a perfect script. And when our joy is tethered to fleeting circumstances, it becomes just as fleeting, blowing with every change in the wind.

Now, let's lean into a powerful truth, straight from the heart of the apostle Paul. He didn't say, "Rejoice *if* everything is perfect." He didn't say, "Rejoice *when* all your problems disappear." No, from a prison cell, of all places, he boldly declared, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4). Think about that for a moment. He was in chains, yet his spirit was soaring with an unchanging joy. That’s because his joy wasn't dependent on his earthly address; it was rooted in his heavenly connection.

This isn't about putting on a fake smile when you're hurting. It's about understanding that deep beneath the waves of worry, there's an ocean of peace and gladness, because God is with you. When your joy is rooted in His unshakeable character, in His endless love, in His faithful promises, it becomes a wellspring that never runs dry. It's a choice we make, a posture we adopt, regardless of what our eyes see or what our feelings tell us. It's declaring, "My God is bigger than this challenge, and in Him, I find my strength and my song!"

So, my dear friend, release the pressure of trying to manufacture joy from perfect conditions. You don't have to wait for everything to be just right. You can tap into an overflowing reservoir of joy right now, in this moment, wherever you are. Because in the Lord, joy isn't a temporary visitor; it's a permanent resident of your heart. And when you choose to rejoice in Him, you're not just experiencing a feeling; you're unlocking a supernatural strength to live your best life, every single day. So go ahead, let that joy bubble up. It's already yours!

Reflect

What is one area of your life where you have been waiting for circumstances to change before allowing yourself to feel joy, and how can you choose to rejoice in the Lord in that very situation today?

Today's prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, ready to embrace the joy You so freely offer. Forgive us for often placing our joy 'on hold,' waiting for perfect circumstances. Help us to shift our gaze from what is broken to Your unchanging goodness. Remind us that our greatest gladness is found in You, not in our situations. Strengthen us to choose to rejoice in You *always*, finding our deepest peace and most resilient hope in Your loving presence. May our lives be a testament to Your unfailing joy. Amen.
