Anchored in His Grace

My stability isn't found in my striving, but in my 'staying put' in Christ. Friend, have you ever felt like a tiny boat on a vast, unpredictable ocean? One…

Scripture
"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."

— Colossians 2:6-7

From the book "Still Walking"
"My stability isn't found in my striving, but in my 'staying put' in Christ."

Friend, have you ever felt like a tiny boat on a vast, unpredictable ocean? One moment the sun is shining, the next, a storm rolls in, tossing you about. That's often how our spiritual lives can feel when we try to navigate the waters on our own strength. We paddle and strive, frantically trying to stay afloat, but the current is strong, and we often find ourselves exhausted and adrift. We search for firm ground, a solid place to stand, but on the open sea, there's only endless, often turbulent, water.

But just imagine, in the midst of that swirling chaos, a strong, unshakeable anchor drops from your spiritual vessel. It digs deep, finding purchase in the bedrock beneath the waves, holding you steady no matter how fiercely the winds blow or how high the swells rise. That, my dear friend, is the beautiful picture painted for us in Colossians. It’s not about how hard you paddle, but about where your anchor is set.

The Apostle Paul reminds us, "Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him." Notice that beautiful phrase, "continue to live." It’s an ongoing invitation, a daily embrace of the One who has already done all the heavy lifting. You don't have to earn your stability; you simply have to receive it. It's not in your striving, but in your 'staying put' in Him. What a relief!

He calls us to be "rooted and built up in him." Think of a majestic oak tree, its roots reaching deep into the earth, drawing sustenance and strength. Even in the fiercest gales, it stands tall, unyielding. That's you, my friend, when you are rooted in Christ. You are drawing life, peace, and resilience directly from the source. You are being built up, layer by layer, stronger and more whole, not by your own hand, but by His grace.

And what's the result of this beautiful connection? You are "strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." When your focus shifts from what you can do to what He has already done, a wellspring of gratitude begins to bubble up within you. It’s a thankfulness that overflows, even in challenges, because you know who holds you. You know your anchor is firm. So today, let go of the need to strive. Drop your anchor deep into His unending grace, and watch your life become a testament to His faithfulness and your heart overflow with joy.

May you find your stability, not in your own efforts, but in the steadfast love of your Savior, and may His peace fill you to overflowing, today and always.

Reflect

In what area of your life do you need to "drop your anchor" into God's grace and truly rest in His strength rather than your own?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for Your steadfast love and the unshakeable anchor You are in our lives. We confess that we often try to do things in our own strength, but today we choose to rest in You. Help us to continually live rooted and built up in You, drawing strength from Your endless grace. Fill our hearts with overflowing thankfulness as we trust in Your unfailing goodness. Amen.
