The Freedom of Letting Go

Forgiveness isn't for them, it's for the chains around your own soul. Have you ever carried a backpack so heavy that every step felt like a monumental…

Scripture
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

— Ephesians 4:32

From the book "Still Walking"
"Forgiveness isn't for them, it's for the chains around your own soul."

Have you ever carried a backpack so heavy that every step felt like a monumental effort? Maybe it was filled with rocks, or bricks, or even just the weighty worries of the day. That's a little like what unforgiveness does to our hearts, isn't it, friend? It’s a burden we unknowingly hoist onto our shoulders, a silent, unseen load that saps our joy and dims our light. We walk through life, trying to smile, trying to move forward, but always feeling that drag, that ache deep down, from the hurts of yesterday. You see, those past hurts, those sharp words, those moments of disappointment, they can really settle in. They can replay in our minds like a broken record, and just when we think we’ve turned the page, a memory, a scent, a simple conversation, can bring all that old pain rushing back. It’s a natural human reaction to want to hold onto it, to believe that by remembering the wrong, we somehow protect ourselves from it happening again. But often, it only keeps us chained to what was, instead of freeing us for what can be. The beautiful truth is, you don’t have to carry that weight anymore. Our loving Father, in His infinite wisdom, shows us a more excellent way. Ephesians 4:32 whispers a profound message to our souls: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” This isn't just a suggestion; it's an invitation to liberation! It's a call to release the grip of animosity and step into the boundless grace that has already been extended to you. You might be thinking, “But Joel, you don't know what they did!” And you’re right, I don’t. But God does. And He, who knows every single detail, still says, “Forgive.” True forgiveness isn't about excusing the offense or pretending it didn’t hurt. It's not about letting someone off the hook. No, my friend, it’s about taking *yourself* off the hook. It's about consciously choosing to loosen the power that hurt has over your life, allowing your heart to soften, allowing kindness to bloom where bitterness once grew. Imagine the Creator of the universe, with all His power and glory, looking at our imperfections, our missteps, our betrayals, and choosing to forgive us through the magnificent sacrifice of His Son, Jesus. He extends tenderness, grace, and an open heart. If He can extend such boundless mercy to us, how much more can we, in turn, extend a measure of that same divine grace to others? This journey of forgiveness is a powerful act of self-love, a courageous step towards reclaiming your peace. It’s an unlocking of doors you didn’t even realize were locked, revealing pathways to a future filled with light and freedom. When you choose to forgive, you’re not just being kind to someone else; you’re being incredibly kind to your own precious soul. So today, let’s choose to lay down that heavy backpack, release those old hurts, and walk forward unburdened, wrapped in the tender, forgiving love of our Father. You are destined for a life of joy and freedom, and it all begins when you decide to let go and let God lead the way.

Reflect

What old hurt or resentment are you ready to finally release, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient to heal and set you free?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we come to You with open hearts, laying down the burdens of unforgiveness we have carried. Thank You for Your incredible grace, for forgiving us when we wandered, when we stumble. Help us to mirror that same tenderheartedness, to extend kindness and release the past. Strengthen us to forgive others as You have so freely forgiven us, so we might live in the glorious freedom of Your love. Amen.
