The Shepherd’s Unseen Hand

The Shepherd still walks, follows, watches over and protects his sheep, even when they don’t feel His staff or hear His voice. Friend, have you ever felt…

Scripture
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."

— Psalm 23:1-2

From the book "Still Walking"
"The Shepherd still walks, follows, watches over and protects his sheep, even when they don’t feel His staff or hear His voice."

Friend, have you ever felt that whisper of doubt, that quiet worry settling in your heart, wondering if you're truly seen, truly cared for? Maybe you're standing in a season where the vibrant greens of blessing seem to have faded, and the peaceful waters of contentment feel a little stirred up. It’s in these moments, isn't it, when our spiritual compass feels a bit wobbly, that we might wonder, “Is God really here? Does He still see me?”

But oh, I've got such good news for you today! Just like a wise shepherd who knows his flock intimately, even when they wander a bit, our Heavenly Father is always, always watching over us. He’s not a God who shows up just when everything is sparkling and perfect. No, He’s right there with you in the quiet valleys, on the dusty paths, and yes, even when the green pastures feel a bit far off.

The scripture in Psalm 23 paints such a beautiful picture, doesn't it? “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” It’s a promise, a rock-solid declaration that His provision and presence are constant. It doesn't say, “He might be your shepherd if you feel Him today,” or “He makes you lie down only when you’re perfectly behaved.” No, it says, “The Lord *is* my shepherd.” That’s a declaration of His unwavering nature!

Think about it. A shepherd doesn't constantly prod his sheep or yell to get their attention every second. He knows their patterns, he anticipates their needs, and he quietly steers them towards safety and provision. Often, the greatest protection is unseen, unheard. It's the shepherd’s ever-present watchfulness, the subtle shifts in direction, the quiet barrier he creates against unseen dangers. That’s our God – always working on your behalf, even when you can't feel His hand or hear His voice booming from the heavens.

His care for you isn't dependent on your ability to sense it. It’s rooted in His unchanging character, His boundless love. So, whether your faith feels bold and soaring today, or a little tired and whispering, know this: His watchful eye is on you. His protective embrace surrounds you. He is leading you, gently, lovingly, even through paths you can’t yet see. Trust that unseen hand, dear friend, for it is always guiding you towards those green pastures and those refreshing, still waters of His grace. You are always under His faithful, caring watch, and He is continually working all things for your good, leading you to a place of peace, abundance, and favor.

Reflect

When have you experienced God's unseen hand guiding or protecting you, even when you weren't fully aware of it at the time?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, our dearest Shepherd, we come before You with grateful hearts, thanking You for Your constant, unwavering watch over us. Even when our hearts grow faint or our senses are dulled, we trust that Your hand is always guiding, always protecting, always leading us to abundance. Help us to rest in the beautiful truth that we are never alone, never abandoned, and always cherished in Your sight. We declare Your goodness and Your faithful love over our lives. Amen.
