Leaving Your Mark

Our daily toil, whether it’s in a bustling office or a quiet home, sometimes feels mundane, lost in the grand scheme of things. But for the follower of…

Scripture
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."

— Colossians 3:23-24

From the book "Still Walking"
"Our daily toil, whether it’s in a bustling office or a quiet home, sometimes feels mundane, lost in the grand scheme of things. But for the follower of Christ, every stroke of effort, every thoughtful decision, holds eternal significance. It’s not just work; it’s worship."

Have you ever felt like you were just a small gear in a massive machine, turning and turning but never really going anywhere? Do you ever look at your "to-do" list and see a mountain of mundane tasks rather than a path to purpose? I’ve been there. I remember a season in my own life where my daily routine felt like a long walk through a thick fog. The tasks were repetitive, the feedback was quiet, and my passion was flickering like a candle in a drafty room. I found myself just watching the clock, waiting for the weekend, wondering if anything I did actually mattered in the grand scheme of things.

But friend, God wants to whisper a different story to your heart today. He wants to lift your gaze from the paycheck and the spreadsheet to see something far more beautiful. The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians to work with all our heart, as if we are working directly for the Lord and not for human masters. Think about that for a moment. What if the person sitting across from you in the conference room isn’t your true supervisor? What if the toddler needing another snack or the customer on the other end of the phone isn’t your ultimate boss?

When you realize that it is the Lord Christ you are serving, everything changes. The mundane becomes magnificent. The ordinary becomes holy. Suddenly, that email you’re typing isn’t just correspondence; it’s a stroke of grace on the canvas of eternity. That floor you’re sweeping? You’re clearing a path for the King. Every thoughtful decision and every quiet act of integrity is a seed planted in a kingdom that will never fade. You aren't just making a living; you are making a difference.

You see, God doesn’t just care about the "big" moments or the Sunday morning songs. He is the God of the Tuesday afternoon deadline and the Wednesday morning laundry. He sees the excellence you bring to the tasks no one else notices. He sees the kindness you show when you’re tired. He promises that you will receive an inheritance as your reward. Your Heavenly Father is keeping the books, and He is a generous Giver. He doesn’t miss a single details of your faithfulness.

So today, I want to encourage you to straighten your shoulders and hold your head high. You aren't just punching a clock; you are building a legacy. Your work is your worship. Whether you are leading a corporation or rocking a cradle, do it with a smile, knowing that the Master of the Universe is your audience. He is cheering you on, proud of the way you represent Him in the small things. When you work with all your heart for Him, you aren't just finishing a job—you are leaving a mark that will echo into forever. Your labor is never in vain when it’s placed in His hands.

Reflect

How can you intentionally bring a spirit of worship into your daily work today?

Today's prayer
Lord, help me to see my work through your eyes. May every task I undertake be done with a heart of worship, knowing that I am serving you. Amen.
