The Incredible Power of Your Words

Scripture
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."

— Proverbs 18:21

From the book "Still Walking"
"Sometimes, we overlook the quiet power of our words. We focus on grand pronouncements, when often, it's the whispered encouragement or the sharp, cutting remark that leaves the deepest imprint. Our tongues, small as they are, hold incredible sway over the trajectory of our lives and the lives of those we touch."

My friend, have you ever stopped to consider the incredible power nestled right there, behind your lips, in the very words you speak? It’s not just noise, not just air passing through. Oh no, it’s far more profound than that! With every syllable, every phrase, you are painting a picture, shaping a destiny, and truly, my dear friend, you are releasing either life or something far less desirable into your world and the world of those around you. It’s like a seed, cast upon the ground; what you sow with your words, you will undoubtedly harvest.

Think about it. A kind word, a whispered encouragement can lift a spirit from the depths of despair, can mend a broken heart, or propel someone toward a dream they thought was impossible. It's that gentle affirmation that says, 'You can do it!' It’s the loving compliment that reminds someone of their worth. Those aren’t just pretty sentiments; they are life-giving declarations, planting seeds of hope and confidence.

But just as powerfully, a sharp tongue, a critical remark, or a discouraging sentence can deflate, discourage, and even devastate. It’s not about grand pronouncements every time. Sometimes, it’s that seemingly small, almost unnoticed comment that sticks with us, a thorn in our side, long after it’s been spoken. We sometimes focus on the big speeches, but often, it's the quiet whispers that carry the most weight, leaving the deepest imprints on our souls. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21, 'Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.' What a profound truth!

This isn't meant to make you walk around in fear of misspeaking. No, not at all! It’s an empowering truth, a glorious invitation to become more intentional, more mindful, more grace-filled with our communication. It’s about choosing to use this divine gift of speech to build up, to inspire, to heal, and to bless. Imagine what your home, your workplace, your community would look like if every word you uttered was seasoned with grace and designed to bring life. The atmosphere would shift! The possibilities would become endless!

So, today, let’s make a conscious decision. Let’s partner with the Holy Spirit and allow His love to flow through our words. Let’s speak blessings over our families, encouragement over our friends, and affirmations over our situations. Let’s declare hope where there is despair, and peace where there is turmoil. Your words have significant impact. Use them to bring light, to bring healing, and to usher in the abundant life God has promised you. You are a life-speaker, a hope-bringer, and your tongue is a powerful instrument for good. Expect good things to happen as you speak life!

Reflect

In what area of your life could you intentionally choose to speak more life and encouragement today, and what impact do you believe that will have?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the incredible gift of our voice and the power You’ve given our words. Help us, Lord, to always choose life-giving words. Guide our tongues to speak blessings, encouragement, and hope into every situation and every person we encounter. May our speech always bring glory to You and build up those around us, creating an atmosphere of peace, joy, and faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
