The Open-Handed Secret to a Great Life

Our hands are most effective in God's service when they are open, ready to receive His grace and pour it out for others. Have you ever watched a child’s open…

Scripture
"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

— Matthew 20:26-28

From the book "Still Walking"
"Our hands are most effective in God's service when they are open, ready to receive His grace and pour it out for others."

Have you ever watched a child’s open hand? It’s a picture of pure trust and anticipation. They reach out, not to grasp, but to receive, and then, without a second thought, they often extend what they’ve received to share with others. There’s a beautiful simplicity in that gesture, a natural inclination to give and receive that often gets lost in the hustle and bustle of adult life.

Friend, our world often whispers a different tune. It tells us that greatness is found in accumulation – in gathering power, prestige, and privileges. The more you have, the higher you climb, the more people serve you, the more significant you become. It’s a seductive song, isn't it? It promises fulfillment through being on top, being in control.

But then, along comes Jesus, and He introduces a melody that harmonizes with a different kind of kingdom. He wasn’t interested in the world’s trophies. He didn’t come to be waited on, to have His needs met by others. No, He came to serve. He willingly took the lowest place, not out of weakness, but out of immense love and strength. He showed us that true leadership, true influence, true fulfillment, isn't about being served, but about serving.

Think about it: the very Son of God, the King of kings, came to Earth not to lord over us, but to give His very life as a ransom. What a profound act of open-handed service! He didn’t cling to His divine privileges; He poured Himself out completely. And in doing so, He redefined what it means to be truly great.

This isn't a suggestion, friend, it’s a divine blueprint for breakthrough living. When we open our hands to serve, we release the burden of needing to prove ourselves, to control outcomes, or to clamor for recognition. We step into a freedom that only comes from focusing on others. We become channels for God’s grace, allowing His blessings to flow through us, not just to us.

When you serve with an open hand, you’re not losing anything. You’re actually gaining so much more. You’re gaining purpose, joy, and a connection to God’s heart that is unparalleled. You’re mirroring the very nature of Christ, and in that beautiful reflection, you find your truest self. This is where true prosperity lies—not just in what you accumulate, but in how freely you give.

So today, let’s choose to serve with open hands. Let’s extend kindness, offer help, and share our gifts, knowing that as we pour ourselves out for others, God is pouring His goodness back into us, filling us to overflowing. You are designed to be a conduit of His love, a servant with a generous heart, and in that, you will discover a life of unparalleled joy and impact.

Reflect

In what area of your life can you intentionally open your hands in service this week, trusting that God will multiply your offering?

Today's prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with open hearts and hands, ready to receive Your grace and eager to share Your love. Forgive us for the times our ambition has overshadowed our call to serve. Help us to shed the desire for worldly recognition and instead, wholeheartedly embrace the selfless example of Jesus. Fill us with Your Spirit, that we may serve with humility, joy, and a genuine desire to uplift those around us. May our lives be a testament to Your boundless love and generosity. Amen.
