Serving the King in Disguise

You want to find meaning? Look for the overlooked, the forgotten, the hurting, and serve. You know, sometimes we find ourselves on a grand treasure hunt…

Scripture
"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'"

— Matthew 25:40

From the book "Still Walking"
"You want to find meaning? Look for the overlooked, the forgotten, the hurting, and serve."

You know, sometimes we find ourselves on a grand treasure hunt, don't we? We're searching for that illusive 'something more,' that spark of meaning that makes life truly shine. Maybe we think it's in the next big promotion, the perfect relationship, or finally achieving that long-held dream. But often, just like looking for hidden treasure, we're digging in all the wrong places, only to unearth more dusty disappointment.

Friend, I've been there. I chased my own desires, my own perceived needs, convinced that once I had 'x' or 'y,' true satisfaction would finally arrive. But it was a never-ending cycle, wasn't it? Like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. We get what we thought we wanted, only to discover there's still an emptiness, a longing for something deeper.

Then, oh, what a beautiful revelation! The truth began to whisper in my spirit: real purpose, real, lasting joy, often doesn't come from looking inward. It blossoms when we start to look outward, when we invest in something so much bigger and more beautiful than ourselves. It's like finding a whole ocean of overflowing grace when you thought you were just searching for a raindrop.

This incredible verse from Matthew, it's a game-changer, isn't it? It completely transforms how we see every act of service. Jesus tells us, with such tender clarity, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' Can you imagine that? Every kind word, every helping hand, every moment of compassion isn't just a good deed—it's an encounter with the King Himself in disguise!

This isn't just about charity; it's about connecting with the divine. It dignifies every single effort to lift someone up, no matter how small it seems in the moment. That quiet prayer for a struggling neighbor, that unexpected visit to a lonely friend, that anonymous donation to a cause you believe in—it's all counted, it's all seen, and it’s all received by the Lord of all creation.

And here’s the sweetest part, the magnificent paradox of God's love: when we pour ourselves out for others, when we try to meet a need or simply offer a word of encouragement, an astonishing thing happens. Our own hearts, instead of feeling drained, begin to fill up. The emptiness that once lingered starts to recede, replaced by a profound sense of connection, a vibrant purpose, and an overflowing, unspeakable joy.

It’s an unexpected gift, this beautiful dance of giving and receiving. It reminds us, in the most powerful way, that true fulfillment isn't found in what we grasp for ourselves, but in the abundant grace we give away. So go ahead, friend, step out today, and serve the King in disguise. Watch how your own wellspring of joy begins to overflow!

Reflect

How might a renewed understanding of Matthew 25:40 transform the way you approach opportunities to serve in your daily life?

Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, we come to You with grateful hearts, amazed by Your boundless love. Open our eyes, Lord, so we can clearly see Your precious face in everyone we meet, especially those who are overlooked or hurting. Stir within us a deep river of compassion and a willing spirit to serve, knowing that as we bless others, we are truly blessing You. Fill us with Your joy as we pour out Your love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
